When it comes to home improvement projects, Portland homeowners are a hands-on group. Do-it-yourself home remodeling projects have never been more popular, and many Portlanders have great success completing a project they start themselves. However, not all DIY projects are a good idea. There are many different reasons why attempting an improvement project yourself could end up being more costly, more time-consuming, and more dangerous than calling a professional. Here are five:
1. You’ve never done it before. Most Portland home improvement projects sound a lot easier than they actually are. If you aren’t familiar with the type of project you’re about to attempt, or DIY home remodeling projects in general, it’s probably a good idea to call a pro.
2. You’re not familiar with the tools. DIY home remodeling projects often go far beyond the common hammer and screwdriver. The tools needed for more advanced construction or remodeling projects are often unfamiliar to the average homeowner. If the project you are attempting requires you to buy or rent tools or equipment that you are unfamiliar with or feel uncomfortable using, call a pro.
3. You can’t find any DIY advice online. This tells you one of two things: the project is either too difficult or too uncommon to handle yourself. In this case, it’s definitely time to call a pro.
4. All of your friends tell you you’re crazy. If the people you know and love repeatedly tell you that the project you are about to attempt is way beyond your skill set and resources, they’re probably right. Listen to them and call a pro.
5. You’ve tried before – unsuccessfully. Some projects get easier the more often you try them and some don’t. If you’ve attempted a project multiple times before and haven’t succeeded, it would probably save you a lot of time and energy to just call a pro.
Don’t feel bad if the home remodeling project you have in mind is out of your league. Even the most experienced DIYer needs professional help every now and then.
