Go Green! 5 Eco-Friendly Home Remodel Projects

July 30, 2013

Eco-friendly home improvement projectsWe Portlanders love our green city. Portland is recognized as one of the most eco-friendly cities in the country, and we’re always looking for ways to show Mother Earth we’ve got her back. Here’s 5 ways you can go green in your next home remodeling project:

Go Solar
If your home is in a good position to catch lots of sunlight, installing solar panels can produce cleaner, cheaper energy for your house. Your home could even become completely solar-powered.

Insulate
It’s as simple as rolling out the fiberglass. Eliminating heat or cool air loss in homes means you use smaller amounts of fossil fuels on heating.

Low-Impact Lawns
Replace those water-guzzling lawns with flowers or fruits and vegetables. The absence of a high-maintenance lawn means no emissions from lawnmowers, no fertilizers that leak into the groundwater, and less water needed to keep things alive.

Low-VOC Paint
If you’re repainting a room, choosing paint low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) means less chemical emissions. It also means less stink for you.

Bamboo Flooring
If you’re set on a hardwood floor, use bamboo. Bamboo grows back much more quickly than trees and means depletion isn’t nearly the issue it is with regular hardwoods.
