One trend that is becoming more and more popular in the Portland area is the accessory dwelling unit, more commonly referred to as a “mother-in-law apartment.” In the last few years these living units have sprung up all over the Belmont and Hawthorne neighborhoods of southeast Portland. But what is a mother-in-law apartment exactly? And why are they so important? Good questions!
What is a Mother-in-Law Apartment? A mother-in-law apartment is a stand-alone living space built on an already existing property. They range from basement, garage and attic units to structures detached from the original house. They are fully functioning living areas complete with kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. (Don’t worry, there are no random mothers-in-law hiding in the closets!)
