5 Big Features for Small Portland Yards

June 21, 2013

The homes in Portland are some of the most unique and beautiful in the state, but like many urban areas, not a lot of them come with huge backyard spaces. If you’re one of the many Portland homeowners that don’t have much of a lawn or much space to garden, don’t fret. Here are some simple ways to make your small Portland yard shine.

CREATE A FOCAL POINT:

A focal point should be something fun and functional that draws the eye. But keep it subtle! Your focal point shouldn’t double as an eyesore.

INSTALL RAISED BEDS:

In a confined space, it’s better to build up instead of out. Raised beds are a great way to do this, and they can be made into any shape you want.

USE TALL GARDEN FEATURES:

In keeping with the important vertical theme, a statue or birdbath is an easy way to build up and capture people’s interest.

INCORPORATE A WATER FEATURE:

Fountains and waterfalls make excellent focal points in a yard or garden. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and the soothing background noise of running water makes a great addition to any yard.

SHOW OFF YOUR CURVES:

The yard is a great place to get creative, and simple squares and grid designs can be incredibly BORING. Curves give the illusion of movement, make your yard look beautiful, and can also make it look bigger.

So remember: It’s not the size of your yard that counts, it’s what you do with it. With the right touches, a small yard can be the talk of the town. Need help making the most of your small deck, patio, or other outdoor space? Contact Improvement Remodeling today!
